Articling

Ursel Phillips Fellows Hopkinson LLP is a boutique firm committed to justice at work on behalf of trade unions, their members, and individual employees.  We pride ourselves on our casual, friendly and collegial atmosphere, with extensive interaction between all lawyers and students.

Ursel Phillips Fellows Hopkinson LLP is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. We encourage applications from members of equity-seeking groups. Respect for the dignity of every individual in the workplace is fundamental to our firm and to our practice. We take care to respect our obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code for all employment activities, including the articling recruitment process.
Students will article for a 10 month period. During that time, students will work with all of our lawyers on a wide variety of matters in a number of practice areas, including:

  • Labour Relations
  • Human Rights and Constitutional Law
  • Administrative Law, including Professional Discipline and Regulation
  • Employment Law
  • Pensions and Benefits
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Civil Litigation and Appeals
  • Criminal Defence

We have a demonstrated belief in the dignity of all forms of labour and we strive to have our workplace reflect that belief.  Students are involved in files at all stages, including initial advice, interviews and meetings with clients, legal research, determining litigation strategy, drafting, and preparation for and attendance at hearings and in court.

Applicants should be committed to advocacy on behalf of unions and employees, and have a demonstrated interest in labour, employment, and administrative law.  They should also have the ability  to work on novel legal problems, be self-motivated and have good legal research, writing, and analytical skills.

We anticipate hiring two articling students for the 2023-2024 term. Applications should be sent through viaLawPortal or, if that is not possible, by email in a single pdf to articling@upfhlaw.ca.  Applications should include undergraduate and law school transcripts, curriculum vitae, and a covering letter explaining the reasons for your interest in our firm. Up to two academic and/or professional references are also strongly encouraged.
