Articling

Ursel Phillips Fellows Hopkinson LLP’s history and current activities speak to our long commitment to justice at work on behalf of trade unions, their members, and individual employees.

Students will article for a 10 month period with Ursel Phillips Fellows Hopkinson LLP. (Please be aware that our previous arrangement, involving a rotation with the Unifor Canada legal department, ended May 1, 2017.) During that time, students will work with all of our lawyers on a wide variety of matters, including:

  • Labour Relations (including work in the education, construction, industrial, police, entertainment and public sectors)
  • Judicial Reviews and Appeals
  • Human Rights and Constitutional Law
  • Professional Discipline and Regulation
  • Criminal Defence
  • Civil Litigation and Employment, including wrongful dismissal, class actions and appeals
  • Pensions and Benefits
  • Occupational Health and Safety, including WSIB and LTD claims

Students are involved in files at all stages, including initial advice, interviews and meetings with clients, legal research, determining litigation strategy, drafting, and attendance at hearings and in court.

Applicants should be committed to advocacy on behalf of unions and employees, and have a demonstrated interest in labour, employment, and administrative law.  They should also have the ability  to work on novel legal problems, be self-motivated and have good legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
